It was an honour to represent the University of Queensland at the recent launch of the Queensland AI Hub in Brisbane.
Among the demonstrations from the Medical Robotics and Neuromechanics Lab, a favourite was the Virtual Reality Rehabilitation (VRR) system developed by UQ student Aaron Coox and collaborators at Metro North (notably the Herston Biofabrication Institute and the Occupation Therapy Department at the RBWH). Stirling Hinchliffe, the Queensland Minister for Tourism Industry Development and Innovation and Minister for Sport, was one of those triying our demo.
The video below illustrates a bit more the demo we presented on the day. It illustrates how a user moves his hands to manipulate virtual objects in ways that are relevant to upper limb rehabilitation. Using the embedded hand tracking capability on modern VR systems, we have developed different methods to enable interaction of these virtual hands with the virtual environment.
